Community Archaeology Day

August 6, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Family-friendly event
This program is a drop-in event and free with admission

Put on your dusty hat, grab a bullwhip, and experience a real archaeological dig this summer! On Saturday, August 6, visitors to the Nature Center will have access to an active archaeological excavation at an abandoned 19th century homestead located on CNC property. This homestead was part of the once-bustling settlement of Frost Town, a town built around the logging industry and largely abandoned once the old-growth forests of the area were depleted.

Visitors will be able to hike or shuttle out to the archaeological site and learn about Frost Town and the excavation techniques that are uncovering its secrets. At the site, visitors can try their hand at the sifting equipment, observe the excavation grids, and learn about the excavation from students in Frost Town Archaeology, an archaeological field school run by SUNY Brockport. Back at the Visitors Center, complimentary refreshments will be available down at the artifact lab where interested visitors can watch and help students clean and record finds from the field for storage and further analysis.

Shuttles from the Nature Center to the Hall Homestead site will depart from the Nature Center every half hour. Visitors will also have the option to hike out to the site (approximately 1.5 miles).
