A New Way of Seeing Through Plein Air

Creating art allows us to slow down, develop a deeper awareness of our surroundings, and invest time in truly seeing the subjects around us. These day-long plein air workshops will focus on developing new ways of seeing through watercolor and drawing. Inspired by Frederick Franck’s “The Zen of Seeing” and “The Awakened Eye,” instructors Tim Williams and Kim Bellavia will guide students into meditative ways of seeing that will develop student’s artistic awareness and allow them to experience familiar sights with new eyes.

In the morning, participants will explore basic drawing and watercolor techniques along with the ‘Zen-like’ process of seeing at the heart of this workshop. Each student will then be invited to find a quiet place to practice the art of seeing, focus on a particular object or area, and illustrate what they see on paper. Instructors will be available to provide technical assistance and encouragement for each student. At the end of the day, students will gather to share their compositions with the group and reflect on their experiences.

Workshops are appropriate for all levels, including people with little or no drawing experience. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Materials will be provided.
